The Textile Conservation Centre’s education of textile conservators has a long history - in fact, the education work started before the TCC was established in 1975.
The MA Textile Conservation (MATC): 1999-2009
The MA Textile Conservation (MATC) started in October 1999 as a two-year, full-time course, with its first graduates in 2001.
The MA Museums and Galleries : 1999-2009
The MA Museums and Galleries programme also established in October 1999, as a one-year, full-time course, with its first graduates in 2000. The MA Museums and Galleries had different pathways: Access and Learning; Collections Management; Collections and Communication: and the History of Textiles and Dress.
Three-year, Postgraduate Diploma Course in Textile Conservation: 1978-2000
The MATC at the University of Southampton was preceded by the three-year, Postgraduate Diploma Course in Textile Conservation, provided by the TCC in conjunction with the Courtauld Institute of Art. This course started in 1978 with the first Diplomas awarded in 1981. The last Diploma awards were made in 2000.
Three-year, Postgraduate apprenticeships in tapestry and upholstery conservation
The TCC provided apprenticeships in tapestry conservation between 1977 and 1989. Two apprenticeships were held in upholstery conservation between 1979 and 1984.
Two-Year, Postgraduate Certificate Course in Textile Conservation: 1973-1977
The three-year, Postgraduate Diploma Course was preceded by a two-year Postgraduate Certificate Course in Textile Conservation, also provided by the TCC in conjunction with the Courtauld Institute of Art. The first student started the Certificate Course in October 1973 (before the TCC was formally established in 1975) and was awarded the Certificate in 1975. The last students graduated from the Certificate course in 1977.
The TCC also ran a one-year course on preventive conservation in the 1970s.
